When it comes to buying or customizing a kilt, two of the most important measurements to consider are the waist size and kilt length. These two factors significantly impact how the kilt will fit, look, and feel. In this guide, we’ll dive into why these measurements matter and how to get them just right.
Before diving into measurements, it’s important to know that kilts are different from regular pants/trousers. While pants/trousers focus on waist measurements, kilts are usually measured by waist and length. A kilt should sit comfortably around your waist and fall just above the knee.
Waist Size:
The waist measurement is important for the kilt’s fit and overall comfort. A kilt should sit snugly at the waist without feeling too tight or loose. If the waist is too tight, the kilt may dig into your skin or be uncomfortable for long wear, while a waist that’s too loose can cause the kilt to slide down.
Step 1: Stand up straight with your feet together and relax your stomach.
Step 2: Use a flexible measuring tape and wrap it around your natural waist, which is the area just above your hip bones. This is the part where your kilt will rest.
Kilt Length:
Kilt length is a matter of personal preference but traditionally falls just above the knee. However, the exact length can vary depending on your style, comfort level, and the event for which the kilt is being worn.
Step 1: Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart.
Step 2: Drop the measuring tape straight down from the waist to middle of knee. The standard kilt length is usually around 24 inches, but you can adjust based on your height or preference.
